Jailer 2 has taken the box office by storm on its opening day. Riding on positive word of mouth from the first shows, Rajinikanth’s stardom is in full display, and the film is setting new records outside Tamil Nadu. In both Kerala and Karnataka, Jailer 2 is heading for the biggest opening ever for a Kollywood film.
Kerala: Leo’s Record Falls
Vijay’s Leo held the record for the biggest opening for a Tamil film in Kerala. Jailer 2 is now going past it, heading for an opening of ₹12.5 Cr+ gross in the state.
Kerala has been one of Jailer 2’s strongest markets from the start, with pre-sales of over ₹7 Cr for Day 1. The goodwill from the first Jailer, which became a massive hit in the state, has clearly carried over. The record comes even as a section of Mohanlal fans have raised concerns over his looks being cut from the film, showing just how strong the pull of the franchise is in Kerala.
Karnataka: New Benchmark
In Karnataka, the previous biggest opening for a Kollywood film was in the ₹14 Cr range. Jailer 2 is now surpassing that as well, setting a new benchmark for a Tamil film in the state.
Karnataka was the second biggest state in Jailer 2’s pre-sales with close to ₹9 Cr, helped by higher ticket prices in Bengaluru, and the walk-in audience on release day has pushed it to a new record.
Word of Mouth Drives the Surge
The biggest story of the day is how the film picked up after the first shows. With the initial talk turning positive, collections across India grew show by show, with evening and night shows seeing big jumps. Overseas markets are also picking up momentum as the word spreads.
This is the same pattern the first Jailer followed in 2023. The film did not arrive with record-breaking hype, but once audiences started talking, it took off.
What’s Next
The final Day 1 figures will be out soon, and with the opening week running straight into the Dasara holidays, Jailer 2 is set for a massive run. The film is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, with Rajinikanth returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian.
